Samaria is the one gorge in western Crete that almost every traveller knows by name before they land. At roughly 16 km, it is frequently cited as one of Europe’s longest gorges. The path starts high at Xyloskalo on the edge of the Omalos plateau. It descends through dense forest and a stone riverbed before reaching the narrow passage of the Iron Gates. The route finishes at Agia Roumeli by the Libyan Sea.
Staying at Kandania Paradise puts you in a strong position for this trek. The Xyloskalo entrance is 41.4 km away. This translates to about a 55-minute drive through the mountains. An early start is essential to beat the midday heat. We arrange an early breakfast for guests walking the gorge. This allows you to fuel up properly before hitting the road.
Starting at Xyloskalo
The entrance at Xyloskalo sits above the gorge surrounded by the White Mountains. The first part of the walk drops steeply on a stepped path. The day begins with focus straight away. This is the section where knees and shoes are tested early.
The best way to handle the descent is to take it slowly from the first minutes. There is no advantage in rushing here. The stones become smooth from years of use. The path asks for steady footing. Once the trail loses height, the gorge begins to settle into a longer walking rhythm. The landscape shifts gradually from wooded mountain terrain to dry rock walls.
The old village inside the gorge
About halfway through the journey, you reach the old village of Samaria. This is a highly useful spot to sit down and rest. People lived in this isolated valley until 1962. The area was then declared a National Park. The inhabitants relocated to protect the unique ecosystem.
This valley serves as the primary habitat for the kri-kri. This is Crete’s native wild goat. Sightings are never guaranteed. However, you can frequently spot them resting near the preserved stone houses. They generally prefer to keep their distance from hikers.
The Iron Gates
The visual highlight of the trek is the Iron Gates. The rock faces tower hundreds of meters into the sky here. The passage narrows to a gap that is only a few meters wide. Moving calmly through this tight corridor avoids bottlenecks.
Once you pass through, the path opens back up. The dramatic section feels like a natural finish. However, you still have a few kilometers before reaching the sea.
Reaching the coast
After passing the Iron Gates, the path continues toward the southern exit of the national park. The official park boundary sits a few kilometers inland from the actual village of Agia Roumeli. This final stretch follows a flat coastal track. This section is completely exposed to the heat. It often feels longer than expected.
A private minibus usually operates between the gorge exit and the village. This is a highly practical option if your legs are tired. It allows you to skip the final flat walk and maximize your time by the sea. Treat this service as a convenient bonus on the day.
Agia Roumeli
Agia Roumeli has no road connections to the rest of the island. It is accessible only by foot or by boat. This isolation is part of the experience. You descend through the mountains and return along the rugged south coast by ferry.
There is usually plenty of time in the village before the afternoon boat arrives. The sea feels highly restorative after hours of walking on stone. Packing your swimwear and a dry shirt right at the top of your bag is a smart habit. This prevents you from emptying your entire bag onto the beach.
Logistics
Going Through Palaiochora
For a seamless day, coordinating your transport from the Palaiochora side is highly effective. The timeline flows naturally like this:
Morning: Drive from Kandania Paradise down to Palaiochora. Park your car and catch the early local bus up to the Xyloskalo entrance.
Day: Enjoy the full, unhurried descent through the gorge.
Afternoon: Take the afternoon ferry from Agia Roumeli back to Palaiochora.
Evening: Pick up your car and take the short, easy drive inland back to Kandania Paradise.
Ferry schedules shift throughout the season. Checking the exact timings the day before you set off prevents surprises.
Doing it at your own pace
If you prefer total flexibility, you can drive directly to Xyloskalo in the morning. Kandania Paradise sits centrally in the region. This gives you a geographical advantage. The mountain peaks of Omalos and the southern ferry ports are both easily accessible.
Tickets
Samaria Gorge is a ticketed route. Issuing tickets online is the most efficient method. The official ticket system also carries current notices regarding access. The operating period is seasonal. Weather directly affects access. Local authorities close the gates if there is a risk of rockfalls or severe weather.
There are also entry-time rules. A full crossing requires a morning start. Later arrivals are often limited to a short walk from the entrance rather than the full descent. Leaving early protects the day from the beginning.
What to expect
Samaria is long and stony. The walking time is commonly around five to seven hours. This depends heavily on pace and heat. Planning the day with space rather than pressure is a sensible approach.
Closed shoes with good grip are important. Light hiking shoes provide the best support. Thin sandals are a poor match for the terrain. Walking poles help significantly on the first descent.
Carry water and use refill points sensibly. Bringing a small amount of solid food makes the middle of the walk much easier. Sun protection is necessary because the lower sections are fully exposed. Keeping some cash with you is recommended for the ferry and small expenses. A charged phone is useful but signal inside the canyon is not guaranteed.
20km from Kandania Paradise is the Anydri Gorge, a 3km hike in southwest Crete starting from Anydri village that leads straight to the pebbles of Gialiskari Beach
23 kilometers from Kandania Paradise, Agia Eirini Gorge leads you through shaded trees, rocky passages, and local history before the route opens toward Sougia and the Libyan Sea
